She was born on October 27, 1949 in Hancock to the late Charles and Esther (Maki) Naasko. Arbutus was raised in Toivola and South Range and was a graduate of Jeffers High School.

On August 27, 1966, she was united in marriage to her soulmate Raymond Durocher, Jr. Together they raised four children in Painesdale, shared their lives with friends and family in Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, and for the past 3 years returned to their roots in the Copper Country.
