Obituary of Irene Kokko

South Range  

  Irene Ida Kokko, age 92, died Thursday, February 16, 2017 at PortagePointe where she had been a resident for the past 4 years.  Irene was born February 26, 1924 in Baltic, Michigan, a daughter of Erick and Ida (Perala) Karna.  The family moved to Painesdale, Michigan when Irene was 4.  She was a graduate of Jeffers High School, class of 1941.  After graduation, she worked for the U. S. Steel Corp in Gary, Indiana in the billing department.  She married Theodore Kokko on October 25, 1943 in Gary, Indiana.  They have lived in South Range since 1946.  She worked for the A&P grocery store in Hancock and also for the South Range Dairy Bar.

     She was a life-long member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she served as the financial secretary for 10 years, a former member of the Martha and Mark Circle of the church, and a member of the Rangers Post #6165 VFW Auxiliary of South Range.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Ted; her parents; two sisters, infant Martha, and Laila Torro; six brothers, Urho, Severi (Martha’s twin), Osmo, Paul, and twin brothers Wesley and Aulie. Surviving are her son, Vernon, of Sterling Heights, MI; three daughters, Olivia Allen of Tyler , TX, Susan(John) Uren of Hancock, Joanne (Randy) Kangas of Katy, TX; one granddaughter Jodi (John) Bullard; four grandsons, Brad(Brandi) Uren, Michael(Nicole) Uren, Nathan Kangas and Ryan Kangas; and great-grandchildren Collin, Brandon, Jonathan, Dean, Addison, Theodora and Laila; and numerous nieces and nephews.

     A memorial service for Irene will be held 11 am Friday May 12, 2017, at Grace Lutheran Church of South Range with Rev. Julie Belew to officiate, burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery of South Range. 

     Friends may call on Friday May 12, 2017, from 10 am until time of services at Grace Lutheran Church of South Range.

      Memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church of South Range, Copper Range Historical Society of South Range, the Adams Township School District Foundation, Rangers Post #6165 VFW Auxiliary of South Range or a charity of your choice.
