Laurie (John) Monticello, 47, of Dollar Bay, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer on March 4, 2017, at the Omega House in Houghton, MI.
Laurie was born on February 10, 1970, in Hancock, MI, to James and the late Pat (Dreis) Lassila. As a child, she resided in in Ontonagon and moved to Hancock where she graduated from Hancock Central High School in 1988.
Laurie married John Monticello of Houghton on May 28, 1996, and for the past 20 years resided in Dollar Bay.
Laurie’s genuine kindness, warmth and compassion touched many. Her sense of humor and SISU brought many laughs to all that had known her. This was shown throughout her daily interactions with customers and coworkers whom she considered family at her 27-year career at Pat’s Foods in Hancock as a Dairy Manager. She also worked part-time at Superior Video in Calumet, MI for 14 years.
Laurie was a member of First Lutheran Church of Dollar Bay and served on the church council.
Survived by loving husband, John Monticello of Dollar Bay, father James Lassila of Houghton, mother-in-law; Pat Halkola of Mission TX; step-sons Eric Monticello of Moorehead, MN, Chad (Jacqueline Rothenberger) Monticello of Hancock and Jared (Rachel) Monticello of Ripley; granddaughter Ellie Monticello of Ripley; grandson Jaxon Monticello of Hancock, brother John Perala of Englewood, FL, sisters Cindy (Dustin) Allred of Tucson, AZ, Ruth (Dave) Whitney of Livonia, MI, Lisa LaSota of Shoreview, MN, Sheri Barry of Redridge, nieces Nicole (Zach)Bailey of New Boston, MI, Ashlee (Colton) Echols and Rachael Allred of Tucson, AZ, Brittany Barry of Mechanicsburg, PN, Cassandra Barry of New Berlin, WI, Brooke LaSota and Paige LaSota of Shoreview, MN; nephews; Mike (Jessica) Ford, of Phoenix, AZ, and Dan (Steph) Ford of Tucson, AZ; Dustin Allred and Jordan Allred of Tucson, AZ and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
She is preceded in death by her mother Pat Lassila and father-in-law Eugene Monticello.
A time to celebrate Laurie's life will be held from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday March 8, 2017, at the Dollar Bay Fire Hall.
